The Antiquarium of Boscoreale was
founded in 1991 by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei It
shows the main aspects of the Vesuvian area during the Roman age and
how people made use of natural resources.
With the help of botany, pollen analysis and paleontology, we try to
understand the state of the places, the typology of flora and fauna
(partly disappeared) of the Vesuvian territory, the agricultural and
pastoral conditions and, more generally, the way of life of the
Vesuvian people in that age and their relationship with the
environment.
The visit ends with the visit of the nearby rustic villa 'Villa
Regina'. This is the only rustic villa open to the public, after
complete excavation and restoration. Here too wine production was
the main activity, as it can be seen from rooms for grape pressing,
featuring the tub where the grapes were trodden out (calcatorium),
the fixtures for supporting the wooden press (torcular) and the
large wine cellar with its earthenware jars fixed in the ground (dolia
defossa) where the wine was stored.
Several finds from this villa and from other ones of the area are
displayed in the Antiquarium. |
