Cami Flegrei, or "The Burning Fields" is a volcanic area whose
fascination attracted the Greeks and that's where they founded the
oldest colony of Magna Grecia: Cuma.
The Roman patricians spent their holidays here, enjoying the wild
climate and the hot spring waters. Some of them are still available
today. Baia was infact the largest thermal centre after the Terme of
Diocleziano. Pozzuoli was the most important commercial port of the
Roman Empire. They had a large amphitheatre and it was in the
neighborhood that S. Gennaro, patron saint of Naples, was beheaded
in the 4° century A.D.
Particularly quaint is the old city of Pozzuoli invaded by the sea
in the 70's due to the phenomena of Bradisism and subsequently
evacuated. A visit to the area can include all of the above and
more, guaranteeing splendid views all the way through.
A visit has to be carried out by a bus or car. |
