Paestum was
founded around the year 600 B.C. by
Greeks and was named Poseidon. The
three most important temples were
built between the 6th and the 5th
century B.C.
The Poseidon Temple is considered to
be one of the three best examples in
Europe.
There is also an
excellent modern museum that houses
the famous "Tomb of the Diver", a
unique painting dating back to 500
B.C.
Salerno is a
modern industrial port that has
grown in size since World War II.It
was the site of the Allied landing
in September 1943. The
Sicilian-Norman style cathedral in
the old town centre is certanly
worth a visit, with its magnificent
bronze doors , a pulpit and the tomb
of the Pope Gregory VII. |
